A car crash late Friday night in southeast Fresno left one person dead, one in critical condition and put four others in the hospital, fire officials said.

The crash happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. at Tulare Street and Minnewawa Avenue in front of South Point Church.

“This is a pretty devastating scene,” California Highway Patrol Sgt. Matt Radke said.

One vehicle was traveling west on Tulare and the other north on Minnewawa.

The car on Minnewawa failed to stop at the stop sign and struck the other vehicle.

Radke said investigators believe the driver of the vehicle that failed to stop may have been drunk.

Both vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed.

Investigators are still piecing things together, but the person who died was ejected from the car and into a tree.

“In 20 years, I’ve never seen someone ejected that way,” Radke said.

No other information was immediately available.
