Komen Central Valley to offer free breast cancer screening

Susan G. Komen Central Valley is joining with Clinica Sierra Vista for a free breast cancer screening event on Sept. 26.

The event is designed to help African-American women access preventive services for detecting breast cancer at an early stage.

The screening, part of the Susan G. Komen Circle of Promise Initiative, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rutherford B. Gaston Middle School multipurpose room, 1100 E. Church Ave.

To qualify for the screening, women must be 40 and older, low income, uninsured or underinsured and have not had a mammogram within the past year.

Women must have a primary care doctor or establish one the day of the event. They also must complete a clinical breast exam prior to mammogram.

Eligibility for the screening must be determined by Sept. 20. Women must call Erin Portugal at Clinica Sierra Vista at 559-457-5344 for eligibility to be established by that date.

Bags of fruit will be provided to the first 100 people at the event, and healthy snacks will be provided throughout the day.
