Tulare father running marathon to help his veteran son, who has leukemia

A Tulare man will be running a marathon to raise money for his son, a third-generation veteran who is battling a rare form of leukemia.

Art Vargas’ goal: raising $26,000 to join his son in his battle against the disease.

Art Vargas Jr. 27, was diagnosed in January and is continuing treatment, but his father says medical bills have taken a toll on the family’s finances.

“Just like the ancient Greek messenger that ran 26 miles to deliver a message of victory, I too have chosen a 26.2-mile journey through rural central California to spread the message about my son's battle and the victory I know is coming,” Vargas said.

So far, Vargas’ crowdfunding website has raised $1,105.
