Crime tape

The person killed after crashing into a Fresno County canal over the weekend has been identified.

The driver was Luis Hernandez, 15, of Tranquillity, said Fresno County Coroner’s Office spokesperson Tony Botti.

Hernandez was a student at Tranquillity High School.

The crash was reported around 6:45 a.m. Saturday after a passer-by saw the tires of a submerged vehicle in a canal near James Road and Lincoln Avenue.

Authorities recovered a white 2016 Toyota Corolla with a dead body inside.

CHP initially reported the victim as being a man in his 20s.

Authorities say Hernandez was traveling on James Road when he failed to navigate a curve, crashing into the canal.

The crash is under investigation.
