Fresno, your residential trash rates are going up July 1. Here’s what to know
Fresno garbage rates are increasing Wednesday, a result of a city council vote two years ago.
“The increase goes to pay for higher fuel costs, vehicle replacements, higher labor costs, so it’s just the cost escalation adjustment,” said Fresno Public Utilities Director Paul Amico.
The monthly price for a 96-gallon increases $3.20, a 9% increase — to $38.70 from $35.50. A smaller 64-gallon cart increases $2.91, also a 9% increase — to $35.25 from $32.34. That applies to the gray garbage cans, blue recycling bin and green organic waste bin.
The rates only apply to residential customers, not commercial or those living in apartments.
It is the third of five years that ratepayers will see their bills increase. Rates will continue to increase automatically every July 1 through 2028.
The rates will continue to increase the next two years for the 96-gallon carts:
• July 1, 2027: $41.99 per month, an increase of $3.29.
• July 1, 2028: $45.24 per month, an increase of $3.25.
City faced deficit
City officials told the Fresno City Council at the time of the June 2024 vote, that without the increase, the city faced a $50 million deficit. Trash rates went unchanged since 2009.
Garry Bredefeld and Luis Chavez voted against in the 5-2 vote. Both were running for Fresno County supervisor, won their elections and now are serving in those seats.
“We’re trying to do our part to make sure that you feel like you are getting the best value for your dollar, but if there’s something we could be doing better, please reach out and let us know,” said Fresno City Councilmember Tyler Maxwell. He voted in favor of the raise in 2024.
The city does offer a $5 affordability credit for low-income customers. For more information on the program, call 559-621-6888.
