The Hanford Police Department warned residents to be on the lookout and to avoid the area of Merritt Street and Centennial Drive near the Hanford Sport Complex after receiving numerous reports of a possible mountain lion in city limits.

Police contacted the state Department of Fish and Wildlife about the incident, then worked together to locate the mountain lion, which then was tranquilized.

“Thank you for your reports and staying out of the area as we worked to bring this situation to a safe, peaceful conclusion,” the Police Department posted on its Instagram account.

The department reminds people to keep a safe distance if they see anything that resembles a mountain lion either in person or on their home security footage, to move indoors if possible and to call its nonemergency line at 559-585-2540.

Mountain lions have been sighted this year in Shaver Lake and near a college campus in Merced.
