Fresno dedicates airport walkway art gallery to late director
The man who helped expand the Fresno Yosemite International Airport now has his name as a permanent fixture at the facility.
The late Henry Thompson oversaw the “FAT Forward” construction program that led to a new terminal, security screening, parking structure and more flights during his tenure as the city’s airport director.
He died unexpectedly last year. On May 22, the city dedicated part of FYI as the Henry L. Thompson Memorial Art Gallery.
“Henry’s distinguished career and steady leadership left an enduring mark not only on this airport but across our community. His vision, commitment, and belief in what this airport could become will continue to benefit travelers for many decades to come,” Mayor Jerry Dyer said at a ceremony unveiling a plaque in Thompson’s honor.
The gallery is the walkway on Concourse B, which opened last year, months after Thompson’s passing. The gallery features paintings and sculptures.
Several city officials, Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, and Thompson’s family attended the unveiling.
Thompson’s sister, Jacqueline Thompson, choked up while speaking. Her brother started working at airports on the tarmac, and worked his way up to administrative positions.
“Henry’s work ethic was not only focused on achieving goals for himself, but also helping those around him become the very best that they could be in their own positions. He believed success came when you worked hard together,” Jacqueline Thompson said.
Thompson died in July while vacationing in Las Vegas. He served as Fresno’s airport director since December 2021, after serving a similar role at the Santa Barbara airport. During his 35 years in aviation, Thompson also served in management roles for airports in San Francisco, San Jose and Shreveport, Louisiana.
