Clovis professor who died suddenly remembered for his impact on others
The sudden death of a Clovis Community College professor has left a void not only on the junior college campus but amongst the Punjabi community in California.
Gurinder Singh Gary Khaira died unexpectedly May 13 of a heart attack, according to babushahi.com, a Punjab media outlet.
Khaira was 39 years old.
Well respected at the Clovis Community College, Khaira was an engineering instructor and served as advisor to the Engineering Renaissance Club.
“Professor Khaira was deeply committed to his students and took great pride in his work as an educator,” Clovis Community College said in a news release. “Professor Khaira made a lasting difference in the lives of many, and he will be greatly missed across our District community.”
Khaira’s impact also was felt among the Punjabi community, which is one of the largest ethnic groups in the central San Joaquin Valley with an estimated 50,000 immigrants and their descendants from the Indian state of Punjab.
“It is with a broken heart we share the passing of our brother Gary, Gurinder Khaira,” Bakersfield vice mayor Manpreet Kaur posted on social media. “Our eldest brother, our watchdog and guide since childhood. We are shaken by the news.”
Khaira is survived by his wife and three children.
A GoFundMe page was created to help support his family and generated more than $63,000 and 330-plus donations so far.
“He dedicated his life to supporting his family, serving his students, and giving back to his community,” wrote Virender Malhi in the fundraising page. “Known for his kindness, passion, and genuine care for others, Gary made a lasting impact on everyone he met.
“Any donation, big or small, will make a meaningful difference. If you’re unable to contribute, please consider sharing.”
