Fresno City Attorney, family allegedly threatened at home by parolee holding knife

Fresno City Attorney Andrew Janz said a man armed with a knife showed up at his home around 3:30 a.m. on May 17, ringing the doorbell and then banging on the back door. Deputies arrested Larry Orduna Torrez, 56, a parolee who was charged with attempted first-degree burglary and trespassing and pleaded not guilty. Janz said he believes Torrez targeted him over restraining order petitions Torrez had filed against Police Chief Mindy Casto, which Janz’s office defended in court. Click here for full story.

NY flavor can’t stop Fresno restaurant closure after 4 months. Road work took toll

Big Apple Platters NYC, a New York-style halal food spot inside a 76 gas station, has closed just four months after opening despite winning recognition as Fresno’s No. 1 fast food restaurant for a month. Owner Shaan Singh said lengthy street construction along Herndon Avenue closed two of three entryways to the gas station, prompting Uber Eats and DoorDash to drop the restaurant from their platforms. Singh said he exhausted family loans and other funding sources before shutting down, but vowed to reopen the concept at some point. Click here for full story.

Update: One person killed in CA shooting that involved Tulare County deputies

One person was killed in a shooting involving Tulare County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Wednesday morning in Tulare. The incident began during a welfare check around 9:30 a.m. in the 400 block of West Matheny Avenue, where deputies were confronted by a man in the backyard of the home.
