Shaw Ave most common denominator for Clovis car crashes, but it didn’t rank No. 1

A FedEx commercial truck and an SUV collided during lunch hour Wednesday at the intersection of Clovis and Nees avenues — the latest sign that vehicle crashes continue to increase in Clovis.

And it’s not always along Shaw Avenue, which was the most common road for Clovis collisions in 2025.

Last year, Clovis police reported 1,273 collisions, with the top three primary cause factors being unsafe speed, unsafe turn and red light running.

That’s an increase of 21% from 2024, according to police.

The day of the week with the highest number of collisions was Tuesday, and the most frequent time for crashes in the city was 3-4 p.m.

DUI drivers were involved in 70 collisions last year.

In 2024, seven of Clovis’ top 10 intersections for collisions occurred along Shaw Avenue.

That’s changed a bit from data collected in 2025, when four Shaw intersections made the list.

Here’s the latest breakdown of intersections where crashes occurred most frequently in Clovis:

1. Herndon/Clovis: 33 collisions in 2025

The popular commercial area intersection, which is also near the Highway 168 entrance and exit ramps, previously was second on the list with 24 collisions in 2024.

2. Shaw/Willow: 29

Another busy commercial area that’s also in proximity to Highway 168, this intersection actually was Clovis’ most dangerous in 2024 with 27 collisions. The area also will become busier once the city’s first Chick-fil-A opens just east of the intersection.

3. Shaw/Peach: 23

With a mix of commercial and residential areas nearby, this intersection had almost twice as many collisions last year after recording 12 in 2024. It previously was ranked No. 5.

4. Shaw/Villa: 20

It’s unclear how much the November 2024 opening of the Vallarta supermarket played a role in the increase of collisions. But the intersection previously was No. 9 on the list with 10 crashes.

5. Herndon/Fowler: 19

Another commercial area intersection that’s a pathway to and from Highway 168, this intersection actually dropped in the rankings despite having one extra collision. It previously was No. 3 in 2024 with 18 collisions.

6 Shaw/Clovis: 17
