Man who shot two correctional officers in Fresno County jail lobby dies in prison

The man who infamously shot two unarmed Fresno County correctional officers 10 years ago in the downtown jail lobby has died in prison.

Thong Vang was serving 112 years to life after he was found guilty of attempted murder for the shooting of Toamalama Scanlan and Juanita Davila in the lobby of the Fresno County Jail on Sept. 3, 2016.

Vang died March 1 at Mule Creek State Prison in Amador County. Cause of death was not provided.

Vang, who was 37 years at the time of the shooting, struck both Scanlan and Davila in the head and neck.

Scanlan was responding to Davila’s plea for help when he was shot. A former Fresno State football player and coach at Fresno Christian High School, Scanlan became paralyzed from the shooting and eventually died five years later at 46 years old.

Davila survived but suffered injuries.

During the 2018 trial of the shooting, Vang testified that he was high on methamphetamine, paranoid and looking for help when he went into the jail lobby.

Thong Vang died while incarcerated in March 2026 at age 46.
