Fresno Unified will remove on-campus murals of Cesar Chavez, official says

Fresno Unified trustees adopted a resolution this week aimed at addressing on-campus homages to Cesar Chavez, and the school district has begun to cover murals on school campuses honoring the late labor leader.

Fresno Unified spokesperson Adela Garcia Duncan confirmed the district has begun the process of amending existing murals of Chavez after the emergence of sexual abuse allegations against the late labor icon.

“We began by having all school sites conduct an assessment of their school or building names, murals, plaques, or images located both inside and outside each campus. As of (Thursday), we have started covering existing murals,” Duncan said.

Duncan said that decisions about what will replace any covered murals will be made with community input.

On Wednesday, Fresno Unified trustees unanimously approved a resolution to launch the assessment, which specifically centered on Chavez but can be implemented again in the future to address similar concerns around facility names and murals.

A mural of Chavez was painted at Edison High School in 2023, and the district has a child development center named after the labor leader.
