Sierra Nevada snowfall begins to subside as wind levels intensify

The National Weather Service recently issued a winter weather advisory for parts of the Sierra Nevada, though the main concern is now high winds rather than snowfall.

Alex Cooke, a meteorologist at the NWS office in Hanford, said snowfall is at elevations above 7,000 feet, though it may trickle down to around 6,000-foot elevations Wednesday night.

Cooke said there’s about a 60% chance that these areas will see six inches of snow.

Meanwhile, there’s up to an 80% probability that parts of the upper San Joaquin Valley and Yosemite can see winds reaching more than 55 miles per hour, Cooke said.

Cooke said people traveling in these high-elevation areas of the Sierras should exercise caution on roads, bridges and overpasses.

The winter weather advisory was put in place Tuesday afternoon, and will remain until at least 8 a.m. Thursday.
