What does a newspaper have to do with a baby trend? Fresno mom completes search
Whoever said newspapers are dead probably hasn’t interacted with a mom of a fairly newborn baby.
An on-and-off trend of taking photos of a baby lying down on top of a newspaper has reemerged.
Newspapers, including The Fresno Bee, have undergone a major transformation in 20 years with the emphasis of delivering the news online.
But even if a printed edition gives news that’s sometimes a day or two old, actual copies of the newspaper provide lifetime documentation of their own, as well as a nostalgic feel of how the news was once consumed.
Plus, newspapers help create catchy baby photos.
“A lot of people have told us that they like the idea,” said Sierra Kopinski, who has taken newborn photos of all four of her children lying on a Fresno Bee.
“They’ve told me they thought it was cute. Some people say they wish they would’ve done that, too.”
A key component of the layout, of course, is to find a newspaper published on your baby’s birthday.
That’s not always a simple task with many newspapers no longer printed daily, instead producing copies throughout a week. Perhaps a newspaper the week or month that your baby was born will suffice?
The Fresno Bee, for example, produces news daily and delivers newspaper print editions on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays (though the Sunday paper is delivered on Saturdays).
“It wasn’t hard to find a newspaper in 2016 for my first child,” Kopinski said. “Our last one in 2022, that was a little harder.”
For Kopinski’s most recent newborn, she turned to her Facebook mothers group for help finding a paper.
“One of the members said their mom had a copy, so she saved it for us. And luckily my son was born on a Sunday,” Kopinski said. “We put a copy of the newspaper (of the date each baby was born) in a memory book so they can look at it when they’re older, read what was going on in the world.”
For the newborn baby-newspaper photo, it’s also recommended to place a blanket between the baby and the newspaper so that your newborn’s skin isn’t rubbing directly on the ink.
When you have those items, take a photo of your baby with the newspapers’ masthead (nameplate) and date visible.
Then boom: You have a catchy, clever photo of your baby with some of the news and headlines that occurred around the time they were born.
A timeless trend.
And maybe one day, headlines will be written about your baby!
