Fresno travelers urged to check flights as massive storm threatens connection cities

A brutal winter storm is forecast to sweep across much of the South, Midwest and Northeast areas of the U.S. this weekend, likely to disrupt air travel nationwide.

The Golden State is exempt from the areas expected to see freezing temperatures, damaging ice and heaps of snow.

Even so, Fresno air travelers are highly encouraged to keep in contact with their airline regarding their flight status this weekend, Vikkie Calderon, media and public relations officer for Fresno Yosemite International Airport, told The Bee over email.

As of noon on Friday, Fresno Yosemite International Airport had already experienced a couple of flight delays due to the winter storms, including flights to Salt Lake City and Phoenix, Calderon said.

Passengers are encouraged to be patient and vigilant in monitoring their flight status by checking with their airline or downloading their airline’s mobile app for timely updates. Updates on the status of flights to and from Fresno are also available on the airport’s website.

The Federal Aviation Administration said on Thursday that its weather and air traffic experts are tracking this weekend’s winter storm to keep flights safe.

On Friday, the FFA warned on X that strong winds could “slow flights” in Boston, New York, Newark, and Philadelphia, and that low clouds could lead to delays at airports in Atlanta, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, San Francisco, and SeaTac.

Several airlines, such as Southwest, American and JetBlue, have issued advisories offering to waive the costs associated with changing flights for their customers.

“The airport will continue monitoring flight updates and encourages passengers to check with their airline regarding flight status as well as to sign up for their airlines mobile apps to receive flight status updates,” Calderon said.
