Fresno will have a connection to the Super Bowl — from the skies
Fresno’s military base will be part of the upcoming Super Bowl.
The 144th Fighter Wing announced it will participate in next month’s Super Bowl extravaganza, providing a flyover before the big football game while representing the California Air National Guard and the United States Air Force.
The flyover formation also represents the teamwork and precision needed to pull off such an act, two skills needed to succeed in football.
The 144th Wing is part of the Air National Guard, a reserve component of the U.S. Air Force.
It is an alert-trained unit, equipped with aircraft and pilots regularly assigned to defend the airspace of the United States.
The military base’s location in Fresno is considered “extremely beneficial to our operations,” with pilots having easy access to overwater airspace and overland airspace — allowing for a number of flying and testing units all around the the Western United States.
The Super Bowl is set for Feb. 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on NBC.
The matchup of the big game remains to be determined.
On Sunday, the Denver Broncos (14-3) face the New England Patriots (14-3) for the right to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl, and the Los Angeles Rams (12-5) take on the Seattle Seahawks (14-3) in the NFC title game.
