Two dead, three in hospital after SUV crash with semi-truck in Madera, CHP says

Two people were killed and three others injured late Wednesday morning after their Honda CR-V collided with a semi-truck at the intersection of Avenue 13 and Road 23 in Madera County.

California Highway Patrol officer Sergio Moreno said that just before 11 a.m. a semi-truck hauling two trailers was traveling north on Road 23 as a CR-V carrying five passengers traveled west on Avenue 13, where there is a stop sign facing Avenue 13 drivers.

“At this time, it’s unclear if the driver of the Honda CR-V ran the stop sign or just failed to yield the other right away,” Moreno said.

As the CR-V entered the intersection, it collided with the right side of the trailers hauled by the semi-truck, he said.

“Ater this impact, the CR-V veered onto the northwest corner of the intersection, overturned and four people were ejected,” he said.

Moreno said the five people in the CR-V appeared to be in their late 20s to mid 30s.

One man and one woman were confirmed dead at the scene, and the three survivors were transported to a local hospital.

The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Moreno said four out of the five passengers in the CR-V were not wearing seatbelts. The weather did not appear to be a factor in the collision, he said.

Wednesday’s crash is the second deadly collision in rural Madera County in the past week.

On Christmas Eve, a 27-year-old Modesto man was killed after crashing into another vehicle, veering off the road and striking a power pole on Avenue 7 1⁄2 east of Road 9.
