A 20-year-old driver was killed early Sunday in a suspected two-vehicle DUI crash in Fresno County.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Cherry and American avenues.
According to CHP, the 20-year-old was driving a Chevrolet sedan north on Cherry at a high rate of speed when the driver allegedly blew a stop sign and collided with a rideshare driver in a Nissan sedan traveling east on American carrying three passengers.
The Nissan spun and came to a rest, blocking both lanes of Cherry. The Chevrolet crashed through a chain-link fence and came to rest several hundred feet beyond the initial point of impact, CHP said.
The Chevrolet driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was found unresponsive inside the vehicle, and was pronounced dead after fire personnel extricated them. He was identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Jose Reyes, 20, with an “unknown city of residence.”
The driver and passengers of the Nissan were taken to a local hospital for complaints of pain.
Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this collision, according to CHP spokesperson Mike Salas.
The incident remains under investigation.
