Teenage girl one of two killed in solo car crash on Belmont Ave. near Fresno, CHP says
The California Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to wear sear belts and obey posted speed limits following the death of two people in a car crash Tuesday night on Belmont Avenue just west of Fresno.
One was a 14-year-old girl, officers said.
“Please slow down, drive attentively, and make safety your top priority every time you get behind the wheel,” the CHP wrote in a release on the crash Wednesday morning.
The crash happened around 11 p.m. on Belmont west of Brawley Avenue and involved a car travelling at a “high rate of speed.”
The driver, identified as a 21-year-old woman, failed to stop for the sign at Brawley Avenue. Then, the car turned abruptly and left the roadway, hitting a power pole, multiple trees, fencing and a parked vehicle before ending up in a trucking yard nearby, the CHP said.
The driver died at the scene, the CHP said. Two passengers, the teenage girl and 27-year-old man, were seriously injured and taken to a hospital. The girl later died. The man remains hospitalized, according to the CHP.
So far, the investigation shows that the driver and front passenger were wearing seat belts, but the rear passenger was not. It has yet to be determined if alcohol and/or drugs were involved in the crash, which is still under investigation.
