A trail expansion project along the Big Dry Creek Canal bank and Letterman Park in Central Clovis will soon begin construction.

The project includes grading of the existing canal bank, construction of a new concrete sidewalk from Letterman Park to the main road, the addition of three new entrances to the trail, and enhancements to several features that would improve the experience for pedestrians, according to the city’s approved resolution.

The goal of the project is to increase pedestrian access and encourage the use of the existing Big Dry Creek Canal bank between Barstow Avenue and Villa Avenue as an informal trail, staff wrote in the planning commission report.

The city plans to improve the natural surface trail along the canal bank from Barstow Avenue to Letterman Park and build a concrete sidewalk from Letterman Park to Villa Avenueto promote the usage of Clovis’s trail system.

Three new entrances will be added to the trail, staff told the commissioners at the meeting.

“The project also provides two new entry features, one at the entrance from Villa Avenue and one from Barstow,” said Marissa Parker, associate planner for the city. “Also, there is a larger gateway feature proposed for the entrance from the new concrete trail to the existing natural trail that will be within the Letterman Park.”

New trail signposts will be installed at all three entry locations, with the name “Letterman Trail” engraved on concrete columns.

Specifically, a gateway structure will be built at the Letterman Park entrance. The structure will not only present the trail name but also a firefighter metal logo in a rust red color, along with a historical plaque to signify the close collaboration between Letterman Park and Clovis firefighters.

Construction is set to begin early Spring 2026 and be completed by June 2026 at the latest, city official said.

The total cost for the project is $187,000 from the Community Development Block Grant, which the city receives annually from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
