A 10-year-old was struck and killed by a vehicle Sunday afternoon in Fresno.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened just after 4 p.m. when a group of 10 children were playing on the offramp on Highway 99 in the No. 1 lane that curves to Golden State Boulevard from Cesar Chavez Boulevard.

CHP officer Jacob Catalina said the driver was going southbound and came around the curve and tried to avoid the child, but was unable to.

The child was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Catalina added that the other group of children ran after the crash.

The driver was cooperating with officers and alcohol and drugs are not a factor.
