The Clovis Post Office on Minnewawa Avenue south of Bullard Avenue is undergoing construction and will soon be upgraded to a sorting and delivery center.

Rod Spurgeon, a USPS spokesperson for the service’s Western region, told The Bee that the renovation at the 655 Minnewawa Ave. location is part of USPS’s 10-year, $40 billion transformation plan to upgrade facilities, expand the mail network, and increase service efficiency.

A centralized hub to expand carrier and route originations, sorting and delivery centers improves the geographic reach and speed of mail and package deliveries, according to USPS.

USPS has opened 96 sorting and delivery centers since 2022, and plans to open around 300 more centers in the next few years. New centers are scheduled to open in Georgia, California, Nevada and Arizona in the coming months, according to USPS.

The upgraded facilities include new mail acceptance technology to improve customer drop capabilities, floor designs and management processes to streamline operations, and new sorting and delivery technology to decrease time to delivery, Spurgeon said.

To create a more positive environment for employees and customers, the construction will also bring remodeled bathrooms, breakrooms and locker rooms, new lighting and painting to the workroom for staff, and a redesigned parking lot for the public, he said.

Spurgeon said the USPS doesn’t have an estimated timeline for completion of construction at the Clovis office. But with the new system, customers can expect faster delivery times and improved reliability, especially during high-volume periods.

Currently, the construction on the west side of the building causes inconvenience in accessing the post office. Residents also told The Bee that the drive-up mailbox has been disabled, and customers have to park and take the mail inside.

“We appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to restore full exterior access as quickly as possible,” Spurgeon said.
