Las Mañanitas, the popular downtown Fresno Mexican restaurant known for its chilaquiles and breakfast menu, has opened a second restaurant in Clovis.

The restaurant, which is Spanish for “the mornings”, was voted one of Yelp’s top brunch spots in the U.S. in 2021 — four years after launching in downtown Fresno.

“In 2019, we started noticing a pattern with a big following from Clovis going to our restaurant in downtown Fresno,” said co-owner Anna Navarro, who runs the restaurant with her husband, Allen Juarez. “That’s why we knew Clovis should be our next location.”

Unlike the first location, Navarro said the second Las Mañanitas at 902 Clovis Ave., south of Old Town, will include a dinner menu.

The dinner menu features Mexican specialties like molcajete Compostela — a sizzling stone bowl filled with mild red sauce over grilled meats, queso fresco, nopales, and onions — and chile verde, featuring tender pork riblets simmered in tomatillo sauce and green peppers. Another standout is the mole: chicken served over a rich chili sauce made with a variety of spices, seeds, and chiles.

The restaurant has plenty of other items to choose from, including tacos, enchiladas and tortas.

“I ordered the torta ahogada, which is like a wet carnitas burrito and it was delicious. The carnitas was perfectly cooked. I don’t like wet burritos, so they were nice enough to put the salsa on the side,” said April Banda, who stopped by to support the Clovis restaurant’s opening day on Monday. “We wanted to stop by earlier in the day, but the restaurant was too busy.”

The menu also includes aguas frescas, classic flavors like jamaica, horchata and cucumber lime and postres, or desserts, like flan napolitano and an ice cream churro bowl.

“One of our ladies is a pastry chef and she’s going to be making gelatine desserts for us as well, so we’re looking to expand our menu. We just want to get settled into our space first,” said Alicia Rivas, a hostess at the new location. “We’re also going to be offering beer and wine soon.”

In addition to serving dinner, the new location also offers a classic dining experience with table service.

“We decided to do a sit-down style experience because of the bigger space we found for this restaurant,” said Navarro. “Our other location is small so you have to go up and order at the counter, but here we have the room for our waiters to come to you.”

The Clovis location features a couple of colorful paintings — one showing a woman in traditional Mexican garments with her red and black hair tightly braided, and the other showing a mother carrying her child in a sling on her back and a basket on her head, walking toward a church. The other wall is adorned with decorations of crosses and hearts in various shapes and sizes, featuring phrases like “Mi Corazón es tuyo.”

Rivas said the goal is to outgrow the Clovis location in the next five years and look for a space that includes a bar. She added that the owners are also exploring the possibility of franchising in San Luis Obispo County.

Details: The new Las Mañanitas is at 902 Clovis Ave. and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm.
