Fires burn in Sierra, Sequoia National Forests — one nears containment

Two wildfires in the Fresno and Tulare counties portions of the Sierra National Forest and the Golden Trout Wilderness in the Sequoia National Forest continued burning Monday.

On neared containment, while the other isn’t contained at all.

The Rough fire in Fresno County, which has already burned 4,754 acres since July 31, is moving north toward Spanish Mountain with 0% containment, said Iveth Hernandez, assistant public affairs officer for the Sierra National Forest.

Officials said a rapid rate of spread can be anticipated if the terrain, fuels and weather align together.

Meanwhile, the Cabin fire in Tulare County is nearing containment at 96% and has burned 5,871 acres so far. Despite the impending containment of the fire, the Golden Trout Wilderness remains closed west of the Old Hockett Trail (33e01).
