U.S. Marine from Fresno among two killed in crash on New Mexico highway

Two marines, including one from Fresno, were killed Tuesday in a solo vehicle crash rollover on a New Mexico highway.

Military officials identified the victims as Lance Cpl. Marcelino M. Gamino, 28, of Fresno and Lance Cpl. Albert A. Aguilera, 22, of Riverside.

Both were with the First Marine Division, based out of Camp Pendleton near Oceanside north of San Diego. A third marine was seriously injured and remains in a hospital in El Paso, Texas, in critical condition.

Military officials said the Marines were deployed to the southern border under President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

“The loss of Lance Cpl. Aguilera and Lance Cpl. Gamino is deeply felt by all of us,” U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Tyrone A. Barrion, the commanding officer for 1st Combat Engineer Battalion and Task Force Sapper, said in a news release.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences and prayers to the families of our fallen brothers. Our top priority right now is to ensure that their families, and the Marines affected by their passing, are fully supported during this difficult time.”
