Mexican consuls in California meet with Gavin Newsom to explore new collaborations
The heads of the 10 Mexican Consulates in California met with Gov. Gavin Newsom in Sacramento last week “to explore new collaborations” to support Californians, including those with mixed-status families in the state.
“At this pivotal moment, our continued partnership and collaboration on key issues is more important than ever,” Newsom said on X.
Newsom met last Monday with all ten consul generals representing Mexico in California, including Fresno’s head consul Nuria Zúñiga and Sacramento’s head consul Christian Tonatiuh González.
“Mexico and California share strong cultural ties and a common goal, to serve our people and support their success in our economy and local communities,” Newsom said. “Thank you to all the Mexican consuls general in California for meeting and reaffirming this partnership today.”
When reached for comment about the meeting with Newsom, Fresno or Sacramento Mexican consulates did not provided specifics on the meeting.
On Instagram, the Mexican consulate in Sacramento said that Mexico and California were united for the migrant community.
“The Government of #Mexico reaffirms its commitment to working closely with the State of California to protect and support our migrant community,” read the post in Spanish. “We thank @cagovernor and his team for their leadership in inclusive policies that strengthen the well-being of migrants in the state.”
Beside Fresno and Sacramento, Mexico has consulates in Calexico, Los Angeles, Oxnard, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Santa Ana.
According to Newsom’s office, the state shared current efforts to help families, including immigrant families, workers, and business owners in California.
The state is funding qualified legal help to help Californians with legal immigration processes and access protections under federal law, according to Newsom’s office.
“We continue to strengthen this collaboration to ensure our community receives the support, guidance, and opportunities it needs. Mexico and California are moving together toward a more equitable and inclusive future,” the Consulate of Sacramento said on social media.
