Magnitude 4.4 earthquake strikes near Avenal in Kings County, according to USGS

An earthquake shook near Avenal in Kings County on Thursday afternoon.

A preliminary magnitude 4.4 tremblor struck at 4:17 p.m., according to the U.S Geological Survey.

The USGS said the earthquake was about 6 miles northwest of Avenal.

The ShakeAlert system was activated. So far, there are no reports of damage.

Earlier in the day, back-to-back earthquakes struck Northern California.
