Fire across from Roosevelt High destroys building operated by Fresno Barrios Unidos

A two-alarm fire early Wednesday destroyed a building in Fresno.

The Fresno Fire Department said the blaze started just after 2 a.m. at Tulare and Rowell avenues, across from Roosevelt High. When crews arrived, heavy smoke and fire was visible.

Crews took a defensive attack because of the amount of fire damage, Fresno Fire spokesperson Joshua Sellers said.

Part of the building collapsed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire started next to Bank of America as 43 personnel responded.

No injuries were reported. The building stood for more than 20 years and was operated by Fresno Barrios Unidos.

The fire caused at least $500,000 damage.

“We are heartbroken to see our space damaged, but we know that Fresno Barrios Unidos is more than just a building — it is a movement,” Fresno Barrios Unidos Board wrote in a statement. “Our community has always come together in times of struggle, and this moment will be no different. We will continue to stand for justice, healing, and empowerment.”
