Looking to eat healthy in the new year? You’re not alone.

California is one of the top 10 states for healthy eating in the United States, according to a 2024 study by Gurney’s Seed and Nursery Co.

Fortunately, the Fresno area offers plenty of options for people seeking fresh, affordable food, ranging from smoothies and vegan wraps to plant-based burgers and poke bowls.

Here are some of the local restaurants serving up healthy options:

Rappit Up

Rappit Up serves a variety of plant-based foods including the Tofu-Tater sandwich with sautéed tofum roasted potato, spinach, avocado and pickled jalapeños on ciabatta bread.

Other healthy options include the Sweet Cilantro Lime Bowl, made with roasted sweet potatoes, black beans, brown rice and red cabbage, and the Green Greek Salad with romaine lettuce, Persian cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and plant-based feta cheese.

You can kick off your morning with a Breakfast Burrito or Breakfast Bowl featuring pinto beans, russet potatoes, sautéed peppers, onions and mushrooms.

Meals range in price from $13 to $18.

The restaurant also offers sweet treats such as lemon bars, peanut butter brownies, and drinks including teas, shakes and lemonades with prices ranging from $5 to $8.

Plant Slayer

Enjoy vegan comfort food including plant-based burgers and sandwiches at Plant Slayer.

Customer favorites include the Cold Cut Deli sandwich, which includes vegan turkey, salami, American cheese and provolone cheese on a toasted ciabatta roll.

Another popular item is the Chicken Buffalo Ranch salad with sliced, buffalo-style vegan chicken, cheese, croutons and romaine lettuce.

“If customers decide to go the deep-fried route with our burgers and fried chicken sandwiches, our food is still healthier than consuming animal-based versions,” the restaurant said on its website, noting that its protein-loaded dishes are cholesterol-free with lower fat and less sodium.

The restaurant also offers a variety of vegan desserts, including cheesecake and milkshakes.

Raw Fresno

Raw Fresno puts a focus on freshness by serving a variety of organic, raw and vegan entrees, appetizers and desserts that are made each day in house.

Customer favorites include The Farmers Wrap, which features hummus, vegan cheese, avocado, purple cabbage and other veggies in a collard green wrap, drizzled with cashew ranch dressing.

The Beans and Greens dish features a Hail to Kale Caesar salad with Peruvian beans, house-cultured sauerkraut and avocado.

Entrees range in price from $12 to $18, while beverages such as fresh juice and hibiscus tea range from $8 to $14. You can also get half a gallon of a green smoothie for $42.

Dessert options include cinnamon rolls, cupcakes and lemon bars, and range in price from $1 for a brownie bite to $35 for a full-sized cheesecake.

Hummus Republic

Hummus Republic, which has two locations in Fresno, offers healthy options for all types of foodies — from gym enthusiasts and health nuts to picky eaters.

“The variety of tastes and flavors and the range of customizable options means that everyone — young to old, vegan to flexitarian, adventurous to conservative — can find something they want to eat,” the restaurant said on its website.

The menu features build-your-own bowls, wraps and pita sandwiches.

Diners can chose from base options such as kale, couscous or warm garbanzo beans, before picking their favorite spreads, proteins, toppings and dressings.

Prices are $12 to $16 per entree. Customers can order a side of pita chips, sweet potato fries or hummus for $4 to $6.

Drink choices range from lemonade to milkshakes and cost $3 to $7.

Butterfish

Looking for fresh and delicious poke bowls?

At both of its Fresno-area locations, Butterfish takes all the familiar flavors of sushi and teriyaki bowls and gives them a healthy twist.

Customers can choose from the restaurant’s signature bowls — including the House Special bowl with salmon, sushi rice and shishito peppers, and the California Bowl with ahi tuna, sushi rice, edamame and cucumbers — or create their own.

Artisan salads on the menu include the Honey Walnut Shrimp salad with mixed greens, cucumber, zucchini threads, shaved snap peas and Asian pear.

Bowls cost $13.50 apiece and salads range from $13.50 to up to 15.50 each.

Viva Be’Bowld

At Viva Be’Bowld, eating healthy comes easy.

Menu options include the Mexcellent Bowl, with black beans, grilled chicken, charred corn and pico de gallo, and the Skinny Buddha Bowl with grilled chicken, cucumber, tomatoes and feta cheese.

You can also choose from signature street tacos topped with steak or chicken, or salads including the Tempting Taco salad, which has chicken, black beans and fire-roasted salsa.

Bowls cost $14 to $17, while salads and tacos are $4.50 to $16.

Drink options include Stubborn Aoda and kombucha with prices ranging from $3.25 to $4.50.

Other customer favorites include the peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip flavor energy bites, which cost $2 apiece.

Rio Acai Bowls

Start your day off at Rio Acai Bowls with a meal fit for champions.

Juice and smoothie prices range $3 to $8.
