U.S. CIS offices, including Fresno, to close Thursday. Here’s which services are impacted

All U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services offices, including the Fresno Field Office on P Street in downtown and the application support center, will be closed Thursday for the National Day of Mourning of former President Jimmy Carter.

According to the USCIS, all naturalization ceremonies, interviews, and appointments set for Thursday will be rescheduled. Those affected by the closure this week will be notified by USCIS. The Fresno Field Office did not have a naturalization ceremony scheduled for Thursday.

All applicants who have biometric appointments scheduled for Thursday will receive a new appointment notice within three weeks. Applicants can also reschedule their appointment using the biometric services appointment rescheduling tool on their USCIS online account before their scheduled appointment.

Applicants can also view the status of their appointment on the USCIS My Appointment page.

President Joe Biden declared Jan. 9 a National Day of Mourning to remember the life and legacy of the 39th president of the United States who died on Dec. 29. The flag of the United States has been displayed at half-staff at federal buildings.

Biden issued an executive order for the closing of executive departments and agencies of the federal government on Thursday.

The field office, located at 744 P Street, Suite 120 in downtown, serves Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, Stanislaus and Tulare counties.

The Fresno field office handles scheduled interviews for non-asylum cases like green cards and other applications and naturalization ceremonies. USCIS field offices do not allow walk-ins.

According to Claire Nicholson, a USCIS public affairs officer, more than 10,000 naturalization ceremonies are held annually in 88 field offices across the country.

Nicholson said that in fiscal year 2022, the U.S. welcomed 974,000 new U.S. citizens, the largest number in nearly 15 years.

Those from Mexico represented 13.3% of those naturalized nationally, although they tend to be about half of the new U.S. citizens in the Fresno area. They are followed by India (6.8%), the Philippines (5.5%), Cuba (4.8%) and the Dominican Republic (3.6%).

The Fresno office naturalized 14,138 applicants in 2022.

The USCIS Contact Center live assistance will also be closed on Thursday. USCIS online tools and resources will remain available.
