Update: Pedestrian killed by vehicle on Cesar Chavez Boulevard in Fresno identified

Pedestrian fatality

An unhoused woman was killed Tuesday night by a vehicle in Fresno.

Officers with the Fresno Police Department responded to the collision at 6:12 p.m. at Cesar Chavez Boulevard and Third Street.

Fresno Police Lt. Leslie Williams said the pedestrian stepped off the center median into the eastbound lanes of traffic when an oncoming vehicle was unable to stop and struck the woman.

The woman was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and was pronounced dead.

She was identified Wednesday by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Rachel Vanderpool, 41, of Fresno.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, Williams said.

The driver did not appear to be under the influence.
