Fresno is among top 5 cities in the nation for outdoor parties, new study says. Here’s why
Throwing a party in Fresno? The Central Valley city is one of the best in the nation for outdoor bashes, according to a new study by Highland Cabinetry.
The wholesale kitchen cabinet seller said it analyzed 50 U.S. cities to identify the top 10 spots for outdoor parties, based on factors including weather, commute times and average yard size.
San Diego was the No. 1 city for outdoor parties with a score of 86.19 out of 100, according to the Highland Cabinetry study.
The Southern California city landed at the top of the list due to its “ideal weather conditions for hosting outdoor events nearly year-round,” Highland Cabinetry said, with 266 sunny days each year.
Bakersfield came in second place, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, was third.
Why Fresno is one of the best cities for outdoor parties?
Fresno ranked No. 4 on Highland Cabinetry’s list of the top places for al fresco festivities with a score of 83.29 out of 100.
“Fresno has no annual snow and minimal rain ... making it ideal for outdoor events,” the kitchen cabinet wholesaler said.
“With 271 sunny days a year, the city offers a reliable climate for hosting outdoor activities,” Highland Cabinetry said.
The Central Valley city also features a larger-than-average yard size of 0.195 acres, according to the study.

How did Highland Cabinetry come up with rankings?
The study used eight variables to assess the suitability of major U.S. cities for hosting outdoor parties:
- Annual rain (inches per year)
- Annual snow (inches per year)
- Comfort index
- Annual sunny days
- Minimum noise complaint fine
- One-way commute time
- Average barbecue cost
- Average yard size
The eight variables were then organized on a scale from 0 to 10 to ensure comparability across different metrics
Highland Cabinetry calculated the composite score for each city by averaging the scores of all eight metrics.
Cities were then ranked in descending order based on their composite scores, with the highest score indicating the best city for hosting outdoor parties.
