Driving to work in Fresno? The Central Valley city has one of the quickest commutes in the nation, according to Lyft.

The ride share company said it surveyed commuters and analyzed data from 35 of the largest cities in the United States to discover “where travelers enjoyed the shortest, cheapest and greenest commutes, as well as the most vibrant downtowns to reward their travels.”

Columbus, Ohio, was the No. 1 city for commuters overall with a score of 84.5 out of 100, according to the Lyft study.

The Midwestern metropolis landed at the top of the list “due to its speedy, cheap commutes to a booming downtown,” Lyft said.

El Paso, Texas, came in second place on the list of the top cities for commuters, and Las Vegas was third.

How long does it take to drive to work in Fresno?

On average, commuters in the United States spend about 25 minutes getting to and from work, according to Lyft.

“In a country where the typical employee spends more than a quarter of their day working, maximizing free time — and minimizing commute time — matters,” the ride share company said.

Fresno was fourth on Lyft’s list of the U.S. cities with the quickest commutes, with an average commuting time of 22.9 minutes.

The average speed during commuting hours is 26.2 mph, the study found.

Lyft’s findings differ slightly from the latest commuting data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

In Fresno County, the average travel time to work is 23 minutes, according to the Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey.

That’s compared to an average travel time of 29.2 minutes in California.

According to the American Community Survey, 73.6% of Fresno County residents ages 16 and older drove alone to work, while 12.4% carpooled and 1.7% walked.

Just 1% of local commuters took public transportation, the survey said.

How did Lyft come up with its ranking?

To determine the top spots for commuters, Lyft started with a survey of 1,404 people ages 18 and older conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll from Aug. 22 to Aug. 26, 2024.

“All respondents had to regularly commute to work” via driving, carpooling, public transportation and rideshare services to qualify, Lyft said.

Lyft also analyzed data across millions of Lyft rides, supplemented by public data sources, focusing on 35 cities in the United States with populations over 500,000 people.

The study look at variables that included:

  • Average commute time (minutes)

  • Traffic (mph)

  • Congestion during commuting hours

  • Speed score

  • Monthly fuel, parking and public transit costs

  • Share of commuters who bike, carpool, walk or take public transit to work

  • Likelihood of happy hours or shopping after work

The commute score was calculated as the “average across speed score, cost score, environmental score, and vibrancy score” according to the company.
