Update: Bicyclist on Hwy. 41 in Fresno killed by car. He was identified by coroner

A man riding a bicycle on Highway 41 in Fresno was killed when he was struck by a driver on Friday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The 41-year-old, identified by the coroner as Luciano Becerra Garcia, of Fresno, was in the fast lane of Highway 41 north of Shields Avenue about 4:45 a.m. as a car approached, CHP said. He appeared to be riding south in the northbound lane, CHP said.

A 19-year-old from Sanger in a 2013 Chevrolet Impala did not see the cyclist until it was too late to avoid a collision, CHP said. The front of the car struck the bike, throwing the rider to the ground across the other lanes.

Garcia was transported to Community Regional Medical Center but died from his injuries, CHP said.

The man in the Impala stayed at the scene and spoke with officers, CHP said in a news release.
