Officers with anti-car theft team shoot man in Fresno neighborhood, police say
A man was shot several times Tuesday by two California Highway Patrol officers and a Fresno County deputy who were inside a neighborhood in central Fresno, according to police.
No officers were shot in the incident just before 3 p.m. near Grant Avenue and Seventh Street, Fresno police Lt. Paul Cervantes said.
CHP officers were in the area as part of the Help Eliminate Auto Theft, or HEAT, team with other law enforcement, according to CHP.
Officers approached a man in a car they believed to be stolen, Cervantes said.
They were outside of their unmarked police cars when they attempted to get the man out of his car, he said. The man then began reversing into the unmarked car.
“The officers had their lights and sirens activated,” Cervantes said.
At some point three law enforcement officers opened fire, he said. Two were CHP officers and the third was with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
The man was struck by gunfire and was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, Cervantes said.
The names and times of service for the officers and the deputy were not immediately available.
Neither was the name of the man officers shot.
A neighbor told The Bee he was resting inside when he heard the commotion. He said he heard at least 10 shots.
