Looking for the perfect place to advance your career? Fresno is the best city in California for working women, according to Checkr.

The background check website recently ranked the top 10 cities in California for women in the workforce based on factors including salaries, unemployment rates and the number of women in management positions.

Although women workers suffered significant job losses during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, “Women, specifically in California, have returned to work in droves,” Checkr said in its study.

“This shift has been driven by a combination of factors, including greater access to education, progressive workplace policies and a cultural emphasis on gender equality,” the site said.

That’s especially true in places like Fresno, Checkr said.

The Central Valley city took the top spot on Checkr’s list, followed by Bakersfield in second place and San Diego in third place.

Why is Fresno a key destination for women in the workplace?

Fresno led Checkr’s list of the best California cities for working women for “a number of reasons,” Sam Radbil, research and content strategist at Checkr, wrote in a Thursday email to The Fresno Bee.

“Fresno showed fantastic growth in the growth of total women in the workforce, trailing only Bakersfield for this key metric,” Radbil wrote.

The Central Valley city also ranked highly in terms of median income growth for women, and showed “promising” growth in the number of women in management positions, he said.

The Checkr study emphasizes the importance of having an inclusive workspace with more women in the management positions.

Good business practices and policies can benefit overall business performance, the site said, and in gender equality in the workplace is crucial to foster California’s economic leadership.

“Businesses that adapt and evolve with these trends will be better positioned to succeed,” Checkr said.

How did Checkr come up with its rankings?

To identify the top cities in California for working women. Checkr looked at five key metrics from the U.S. Census Bureau for the past five years.

Those metrics were the changes in:

  • Number of women in the workforce
  • Women in management positions
  • Women’s salaries
  • Wage gap between women and men
  • Women’s unemployment rate

The factors were then weighted by Checkr and scaled, resulting in the final rankings.
