When is the first day of school? See start dates for Fresno-area students
It’s back-to-school season in the Central Valley.
Public school districts in the region are kicking off a new academic year. While some students have already returned to classrooms, others still have a little time to rest up.
When is the first day of school?
Here are some key dates for parents of children attending elementary, middle and high schools in and around the Fresno area.
When is the first day of school in Fresno County?
Fresno County has 31 school districts, including Fresno Unified School District, which has about 106 schools.
In Fresno County, West Park Elementary School District started the the 2024-25 academic school year on July 22, while students at Burrel Union Elementary School District returned to campus on Aug. 7.
Children attending Fowler Unified, Golden Plains Unified and Mendota Unified school districts started classes on Monday, and Firebaugh- Las Deltas Unified, Orange Center Elementary and Parlier Unified school districts started on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, students at Alvina Elementary. Big Creek Elementary, Caruthers Unified and Central Unified school districts returned to school on Wednesday.
Wednesday was also the first day of school for districts at Clay Joint Elementary, Coalinga-Huron Unified , Kerman Unified, King Canyon Joint Unified, Laton Joint Unified, Pine Ridge Elementary, Raisin City Elementary, Sanger Unified, Selma Unified, Sierra Unified, Washington Colony Elementary and Washington Unified.
The following districts kick off the academic school year on Thursday or later:
- Clovis Unified School District — Monday, Aug 19
- Fresno Unified — Monday
- Kingsburg Elementary Charter — Thursday
- Kingsburg Joint Union High — Monday
- Pacific Union Elementary — Thursday
- Riverdale Joint Unified — Thursday
- Westside Elementary — Monday
When do kids return to class in Madera County?
Madera County has nine school districts, including Madera Unified School District, which has more than two dozen school campuses.
Students at Madera Unified School District went back to class on Monday.

- Bass Lake Joint Union Elementary — Thursday
- Chawanakee Unified — Thursday
- Chowchilla Elementary — Tuesday, Aug 20

- Raymond Knowles Union Elementary — Thursday
- Yosemite Unified — Thursday
