23-year-old man drowns in Reedley, police say. He attempted to swim across Kings River

A 23-year-old man drowned Thursday night in the Kings River near Reedley Beach.

Officers responded to a drowning at 7:45 p.m. when witnesses said a man had gone under water just north of the Olsen Bridge.

Officers and crews from the Reedley Fire Department were searching for the man. A private boat joined in and located the victim and pulled him onto their boat.

Life-saving measures were given after moving to the shore before the man was taken to the hospital.

He later died, police said.

Police said the man, who was from Dinuba, wanted to swim to the east side of the river from the beach area.

He went under water near the middle of the river and never resurfaced, police said.

Family members told officers that he had not been drinking alcohol and knew how to swim.
