A 79-year-old worker was electrocuted Monday afternoon while trimming walnut trees in northwest Fresno, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The accident took place on a piece of property known as Rancho Rio Del Sol, on Valentine Avenue near the San Joaquin Country Club golf course, just before noon.

Sheriff’s spokesman Tony Botti said the victim was trimming walnut trees using a piece of machinery that came in contact with electrical wires and burst into flames. The worker died at the scene. Two groundskeepers from the country club saw the flames and put the fire out with a garden hose.

Family members told authorities the victim was not a professional tree trimmer, but had experience trimming trees.

Cal-OSHA is investigating the incident.
