A bicyclist was killed Sunday afternoon in a collision in downtown Fresno.

Officers responded to the crash at 1:17 p.m. at Stanislaus Street and Van Ness Avenue after receiving a call about a bicyclist down in the roadway.

Officers arrived and found the bicyclist, described to be in his 50s, down with serious injuries.

The man was taken to Community Regional Medical Center but was pronounced dead. He was identified Monday by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Gabriel Ortega, 54, of Fresno.

Fresno police Lt. Steve Card said the bicyclist may have made an unsafe turn contributing to the collision factor.

The investigation, however, is in the early stages, Card said.

The driver remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation.

Alcohol and drugs did not appear to be a factor in the collision, Card said.
