A motorcyclist died and his passenger was in critical condition after they crashed following a pursuit with Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies on Friday in Fresno.

The pursuit started after deputies tried to stop a motorcycle for a traffic violation at 4:24 p.m near McKinley and Feland avenues, but the man and woman on the bike took off.

Fresno County Sheriff’s public information officer Tony Botti said the pursuit ensued at legal speeds.

Two minutes later, the motorcycle ran a stop signing going north on Valentine Avenue and collided with a vehicle that was traveling west on Shields.

The rider and the passenger on the motorcycle were taken to Community Regional Medical Center for serious injuries.

In an update, Botti said the man later died at the hospital. The 22-year-old woman was in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle that was struck from behind was up and walking around, authorities said.

Fresno police are investigating the collision since the crash occurred at the city intersection.
