New closure to Highway 41 planned near Fresno, Caltrans says. This one is 17 miles
A segment of Highway 41 south of Fresno will be closed Wednesday and possibly longer for road work, according to Caltrans.
About 17 miles of road on Highway 41 between Highway 46 and State Route 33 will be closed to cars from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Caltrans said in a news release.
The work could extend into the same hours on Thursday if necessary while Caltrans works on a widening project near the Cholame Y interchange with Highway 46 East, a spokesperson said.
Highway 41 is a common route for people from the Fresno area who are headed to the coast for destinations like Pismo Beach, Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo County.
Caltrans said crews will be adding a new alignment to Highway 46, which will go directly over a portion of the existing Highway 41.
Commuters going south on Highway 41 can detour onto Highway 33 to Highway 46 East before reconnecting to Highway 41. Travelers headed north on Highway 41 can detour via Highway 41 East to State Route 33.
Caltrans said workers will place message and directional signs to assist all travelers. CHP will also be present at each end of the closure.
The agency suggests allowing extra time for a commute while using detours and to be aware of electronic message boards, crew members with flags and highway workers within the work zones.
The contractor for the $148 million project is Atkinson Construction of Irvine, Caltrans said.
About 8 miles of Highway 41 north of its intersection with Interstate 5 near Kettleman City closed in February and was expected to remain closed until July, Caltrans said previously.
