Bicyclist killed when vehicle strikes her in Fresno. Driver taken into custody, cops say

A bicyclist was killed Monday night in a collision in northwest Fresno.

Fresno Police Lt. Robert Dewey said the collision happened at 10 p.m. at Polk and Fairmont avenues when the bicyclist was along northbound on Polk and made an abrupt left turn in front of an SUV vehicle.

The vehicle struck the bicyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

In an update Tuesday, the Fresno County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Michelle Cruz, 53, a member of the unhoused community.

A driver was taken into custody on suspicion driving under the influence, Dewey said. The driver was cooperative with officers.

Dewey said several witnesses were on scene at the time of the collision.

The road was closed for several hours for the investigation.
