Porterville Citizens Police Academy accepting applications
The Porterville Police Department is seeking applicants for its 2015 Citizens Police Academy, a seven-week course covering functions and facets of the organization while seeking to build community relations.
Students will be exposed to various aspects of police work, including traffic enforcement, dispatch, gangs, criminal investigations, narcotics and the use of firearms. Each participant will also be required to take part in a ride-along with a patrol officer.
Aimed at building communication and understanding between residents and police, graduates can volunteer for various operations after completing classes and the graduation.
Students must be at least 18 years old, live work or attend school in Porterville and have no felony convictions or significant criminal history.
Applications are available at the Police Department, and must be turned in before Aug. 14th.
The academy runs each Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It begins on Sept. 15th, and continues through Oct. 27th.
For questions, contact Community Service Officer Steve Walker at 559-782-7567 or Sgt. Rick Carrillo at 559-782-7563.
