A basement fire broke out in an east-central Fresno residence Tuesday night, displacing a family of six.

The fire started in the basement of the home at 1398 N. Millbrook Ave., and caused extensive smoke damage throughout the house. But firefighters were able to contain the flames to the basement.

Battalion Chief Tomas Cope said the family had seen sparks coming from an electrical box. Firefighters used chainsaws to reach the lower level of the house.

Three adults and three children live in the home.

The first floor and crawl space received the most damage, but no estimates of total loss were yet reached.
