Man struck crossing Fresno street has died, coroner says. Driver could not avoid crash

A man hit by a truck while crossing a Fresno street who initially regained consciousness has died, the Fresno County Coroner’s Office confirmed Tuesday.

The 56-year-old pedestrian was crossing Belmont Avenue near Calaveras Street about 7:20 p.m. Saturday when a Toyota truck came along, Fresno police Lt. Zeb Price said on Saturday.

The Fresno County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday the pedestrian was Arthur Augustine, who died at an area hospital on Saturday.

He initially regained consciousness and spoke with first responders, police said.

The driver attempted to stop his truck but could not avoid the collision, police said. He stayed at the scene and spoke with police.
