The Fresno County Coroner’s Office on Saturday released the name of the man killed the night before as he tried to cross Blackstone Avenue in a wheelchair.

He was identified as 59-year-old Fred Leon Black Jr.

Officers with the Fresno Police Department responded to the crash at 10 p.m. Friday on North Blackstone and East Magill avenues, near Herndon Avenue, in front of the Jack in the Box.

Police said Black was in a wheelchair and attempted to cross Blackstone in the middle of the road. As he entered the northbound lanes, he was stuck by a vehicle.

Black was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

The driver remained on scene and was cooperating. No alcohol or drug use was suspected, police said.

Police said Black was considered to be at fault in the crash.
