Sanger teenager dies after car crashes into pole early Saturday along Highway 180

A 17-year-old Sanger boy was killed early Saturday in a one-car crash northwest of Sanger, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash took place about 2:40 a.m. as the driver was eastbound on Highway 180, east of McCall Avenue, CHP spokesman Mike Salas said. The preliminary investigation established that the teenage driver, in a Toyota Camry, drifted off the roadway as he was approaching McCall and slammed into a light pole.

Salas said it appeared the driver never hit his brakes before the crash. It was not known if alcohol or drugs played a role, but a toxicology test will be conducted.

It did not appear that the driver was wearing a seat belt, according to the CHP. His name will be released by the Fresno County Coroner. Anyone with additional information about the incident is asked to call the CHP at 559-705-2200.
