A Fresno firefighter suffered a minor injury fighting a fire in a Tower District home on Thursday, a battalion chief said.

A fire was reported about 7 a.m. by a passing off-duty firefighter and residents on Hedges Avenue near Palm Avenue and just north of Olive Avenue, Battalion Chief Bob Camp said.

The fire was large enough to lead firefighters to evacuate two nearby homes, but they were not damaged, Camp said.

The fire crew determined the home was vacant and had been for about a year, he said. No one was inside, but the building sustained significant damage.

A firefighter suffered a leg muscle strain while fighting the flames but was checked out by emergency responders at the scene. Camp said he was cleared to return to work.
