Evacuation orders for fire that killed SoCal man in Madera County mountainous area called off
The Madera County Sheriff’s Office canceled evacuation orders Tuesday for the fire in the Cascadel Woods area that killed a Southern California man.
Officials at the Sierra National Forest said the Whiskey Fire had consumed about 85 acres and was 20 percent contained.
On Monday, a 65-year-old Whittier died in a tractor accident that started the blaze. Officials said the tractor that the man was operating went out of control on a downhill section of a property, crashing and catching on fire.
Sheriff’s officials had not identified the 65-year-old man.
Sarah Gracey, a spokeswoman for the Forest Service, said fire crews, aided by a helicopter and a fixed wing plane continued to subdue the blaze. About 100 firefighters were involved in the effort, which Gracey was taking place in challenging conditions, due to high temperatures and rugged terrain.
She said no structures had been burned Tuesday.
